Yesterday was the big day with the lifting of the embargo around PS5 tests. We offered you our big report on this new console after more than two weeks in our hands. It was also the opportunity for us to tell you about the famous interface of the machine which is really a big plus with many changes, but especially improvements.
Today, it is on another fairly important point that we want to address with the accessibility of the PS5. In recent years, Microsoft has distinguished itself in this area thanks to the Xbox Adaptive Controller, which allows many players to play video games in better conditions. But for the launch of this new generation, it is PlayStation that will receive the congratulations!

The PS5 – A (very) accessible interface and console?
(presentation of the “accessibility” part from 14min31)
Accessibility on the PS5 generally concerns five important points. Display (for sight), hearing, joystick control, readability, and information transmission. Although Sony is still a little behind when it comes to accessories, with a DualSense controller that has the same flaws as the PS4’s DualSochk 4 (with triggers that touch the ground when laid flat). Sony does not offer a suitable controller either, as can be the case with the Xbox Adaptive Controller from Microsoft.
But in recent months, Sony seems to be interested more and more. In June 2019, The Last Of Us Part. II was clearly one of the most accessible games ever developed to date. And you will see that the PS5 is clearly in this continuity.
A display with a thousand and one possibilities!
The first option is therefore the display. You can configure everything on your PS5. From the color inversion which will offer you a totally desaturated interface, via a large menu which will allow you to configure the colors yourself (black & white, preferably on red, yellow, improvement of the contrast…).
You will be able to choose the size of your text on your entire console (small, normal, large, very large). You will be able to make your text bold or not, raise the contrast of the console and choose the scrolling speed of the texts on the screen (very slow, slow, normal or fast). Without forgetting that all the animations of the interface (animation of icons, games, etc.) can also be deactivated.
It is so precise that even people without particular disabilities can take a tour to adjust the font of their console in great detail.
A personal and fully customizable screen reader
The second category in the accessibility options of the PS5 is the “screen reader”. Very practical for people with vision problems. You will therefore be able to activate this option and a voice (female or male) will dictate all the things that happen on your screen. You will also have the possibility to choose the volume of the voice, but also its speed (among more than 10 different choices).
A controller that can be configured to the end of the joystick!
The third accessibility option will be the famous controller. The DualSense is a real little revolution, but it still risks annoying a lot of players. Thus, it will be possible to completely configure it. It starts with the famous haptic technology and the new vibrations that you will be able to deactivate or adjust according to their intensity (low, normal or high). It will be the same for the intensity of the new adaptive triggers which can be deactivated, or reduced. Finally, you will also be able to modify the awareness and the duration of the key presses, again with three options to choose from (low, normal or high).
But the most interesting is to see that it will be totally possible to configure the DualSense by carrying out its own configuration with ALL the buttons which can be changed in any way. An option that will definitely help a lot of players!

We are continuing this discovery of the PS5 interface in the “Accessibility” part with the subtitles that are available to be displayed everywhere on the console. And again, the options are quite numerous! More than fifteen different fonts, a hundred possible sizes (in percentage), ten colors, types of outlines (drop shadow, brushed outline, etc.), ten colors for the outline, opacity, a background behind the subtitles to read them better, adjusting the background with opacity, colors or even the outline of the latter …
In short, again in terms of subtitles it’s pretty crazy and all the players can only find what they are looking for, even for those who are not necessarily disabled.
A chat transcription to always go further!
Finally, the last part of these accessibility options on the PS5 is the “Chat Transcription” part. For those who don’t know what it is, it’s pretty straightforward. It is about a process which will substitute each phoneme or each sound of a language a grapheme or a group of graphemes of a writing system. It therefore depends on the target language, a single phoneme being able to correspond to different graphemes depending on the language considered.
It will thus be possible to choose whether or not to activate this option, so to choose your language, if you want a male or female voice.
The PS5 – A next-gen gem?
As we have been able to describe to you during our long text (and our long video), the PlayStation 5 has all the cards in hand to become the real technological gem for this next-gen. Identical to the Xbox Series X in terms of performance (for now), reliability and efficiency, the PS5 will arrive next week in France with other solid arguments.
In addition to the new interface which changes radically, but above all improves comfort and user experience on the console, the latter will offer four exclusive games, as well as the famous DualSense which will be a real “plus” on some games. A touch of freshness and novelty that cannot be refused (especially at the launch of a new generation).
