The consumer association is asking insurers to transfer the savings made possible by confinement, which has resulted in a decrease in the number of road accidents.
While insurers continue to collect their premiums, despite confinement which immobilizes a majority of the country's motor and motorcycle vehicles, the UFC-Que Choisir put online, Monday, April 27, a standard letter allowing the insured to request a reduction in the amount of the automobile insurance premium, which would allow consumers to reduce the bill to a minimum during the coronavirus pandemic.
A fall of almost 92% in bodily accidents with containment
Each year, consumers allocate an average budget of around 500 euros including tax for each vehicle as part of their car insurance contributions. UFC-Que Choisir recalls that two-thirds of the premiums are generally devoted to compensation for claims. But with very seriously disrupted and slowed down car and motorbike traffic, insurers can collect premiums without having to pay too much in return, the frequency of bodily accidents having dropped by 91.7% since the start of confinement, there are more 'a month.
The consumer association calls on the public authorities to impose on French car insurance companies to retrocede the savings allowed during the confinement period, and thus to reduce contributions to the tune of 2.2 billion euros. More specifically, UFC-Que Choisir estimates between 1.4 and 2.3 billion euros the savings potentially made by insurance companies.
A decrease in the premium provided by law
"For the reduction in contributions to be strictly equal to that in compensation, insurers must further reduce the amount of premiums", calls the association, which estimates the drop in contributions around 50 euros per automobile and 29 euros per motorcycle.
It is based, moreover, on the law (the insurance code) which provides that the insured have the possibility of obtaining a reduction in the amount of their premium in the event that the risk during their contract comes to decrease, which which is clearly the case now, and at least for another two big weeks
The standard letter making it possible to claim this reduction in the amount of car insurance taken up by the UFC-Que Choisir has been put online by the association. You can access it by clicking on THIS LINK.
