On numerous occasions, Elon Musk has laughed at the LiDAR sensors used by many companies in the quest to make their vehicles autonomous. According to the CEO of Tesla, this is a very expensive and unnecessary technology. But as they say, it is only the c * who do not change their mind. At the end of last week, a strange photo circulated on Twitter. In this image, we can clearly see a Tesla Model Y equipped … with a LiDAR sensor.

Tesla collaborates with Luminar Technologies?

Very quickly, the first rumors evoked a collaboration between Tesla and Luminar Technologies. Rumors that had an immediate effect on the shares of Luminar Technologies on the stock exchange with an increase of more than 10%. So a total change of strategy, or simple tests? If for the moment it is still too complicated to answer this question clearly, a few elements allow us to see it more clearly.

Bloomberg did not hesitate to consult the California Department of Motor Vehicles to find out if the license plate seen in the photo belongs to Tesla, and the answer is yes. This same plate would have been used on several other vehicles of the company, and in particular on a prototype of the Cybertruck.

It should also be noted that the Tesla Autopilot has been under heavy criticism for some time. Last month, after a fatal accident aboard a Tesla, the United States Congress called for tighter regulation of the Autopilot. By working with LiDAR sensors, Tesla could look to make some improvements to its usual system. For years, Tesla has offered vehicles with limited range, but could consider taking it to the next level with Luminar Technologies’ knowledge in this area.
