Late on Twitter, Sunday, June 6, Elon Musk gave new details on the event that Tesla will dedicate to the presentation of the Model S Plaid. Five months have already passed since the announcement of the new version which will replace the old “Performance” and a demonstration will be broadcast live to materialize the start of deliveries.

The Tesla boss has confirmed that the event is scheduled for this week, June 10. At the same time, he signaled that the Model S Plaid will be “the fastest production vehicle of all time” with a 0-60 mph in under two seconds. A vehicle “so good” that it has come to stifle the rest of the brand’s projects.

“The Model S Plaid + is canceled”

In a second part, Elon Musk tweeted that the Model S Plaid + was canceled. Initially in January, during the presentation of the restyled Model S, an even faster model was to arrive to top the range. A project finally left aside, deemed more necessary in view of the figures of the Model S Plaid, its three engines and its 321 km / h maximum speed.

Thus, the horizon of performance projects at Tesla will only count on the release of the second generation “Roadster” model, which it had already shown in 2019 at an event dedicated to the Tesla Semi (its electric truck). Its marketing was scheduled for 2021 but Tesla will certainly have to postpone the date.

Even more efficient, the electric coupe should achieve its 0 to 96 km / h in just 1.1 seconds as it indicated last month.

The end of a competition

Doubts began to gain ground in May when Tesla’s configurator no longer allowed pre-ordering a Model S Plaid +. Expected for $ 149,000, its price difference with the classic Model S Plaid ($ 119,000) was primarily to play on autonomy. And the Model S Plaid + was supposed to reach 520 miles, or 830 kilometers.

In a precision sent to the media Electrek, Tesla said:

“What we’re finding is that once you have a range over 400 miles, more range doesn’t really matter. There is hardly any trip above 400 miles where the driver does not need to stop for restrooms, food, coffee, etc. “

Tesla would therefore have chosen not to push the competition for autonomy further for the moment. A subject, however, at the heart of the selling points of automobile manufacturers at the present time, and of the race with Lucid Motors to offer a sedan with very long range.

Lucid still plans to launch a model with 830 kms and a 0 to 100 km / h in 3 seconds, in the “Grand Touring” version of the Lucid Air. We will have to wait until September before seeing this information confirmed.
