Electric vehicles less expensive to manufacture than thermal cars? This statement seems hard to believe today, but it is what could happen by 2027 according to a study by the BloombergNEF Research Institute.

In detail, the authors estimate that from 2025, electric cars will be cheaper than light diesel vehicles such as Kangoo and Berlingo. The same will apply for gasoline from 2026, like the Peugeot 308, Renault Mégane-e. Finally, in 2027, city cars will be less expensive.

100% of electric sales by 2035?

To explain this price drop, the authors put forward a main element: the fall in the cost of batteries. The decrease is 89% between 2010 and 2020. This decrease will continue with average prices which will drop from 120 euros per kWh in 2020 to 50 € in 2030. Production volumes are also increasing, which again tends to bring down prices.

This study was commissioned by the NGO Transport & Environment. Julia Poliscanova, senior director of vehicles and mobility for the organization, explains:

Electric vehicles will be a reality for all new buyers within six years. They will be cheaper than combustion engines for everyone, from the man with a van in Berlin to the family living in the Romanian countryside. Electric vehicles are not only better for Europe’s climate and industrial leadership, but also for the economy.

According to her, and if Europe sets up incentive policies: “battery-powered electric cars and vans can reach 100% of sales by 2035 in Western, Southern and even Eastern Europe.

Before that, the industry will have to fight growing opposition. We recently told you about this disturbing trend coming to us from Germany. Activists have in fact taken to the habit of vandalizing charging stations. Others adopt a strategy which consists simply of occupying the places reserved for recharging electric vehicles with a thermal car.
