Tesla’s range estimates are called into question in new independent tests conducted by Edmunds, showing that Tesla’s vehicles do not meet their estimates.

In this area, the Tesla brand, owned by Elon Musk, acts as a bad student. Figures from the EPA, an American body in charge of environmental protection, often give estimates that are higher than those that have been actually tested by the teams ofEdmunds in the field.
The EPA’s range estimate is considered the most accurate, but it is not the same for all electric vehicles, as manufacturers have the flexibility to play around with the numbers a bit, influencing the several key factors in calculating this estimate.
Tesla: such poor autonomy?
Tesla is renowned for being one of the best performing brands in the electric vehicle industry when it comes to the range of its vehicles. While Edmunds’ tests have indeed shown very interesting capabilities for the firm’s vehicles, the figures were still below those of the EPA, while most other manufacturers present actual figures above expectations of the ‘EPA.
To take a very concrete example, a Tesla Model S performance of 2020 announces a range of 524 kilometers, but in reality the vehicle has only completed 511, 2.5% less than expected. The biggest gap found by Edmunds during his tests concerns the Model 3 performance, the latter only traveled 411 kilometers, while the EPA forecasts predicted nearly 500.
As for the other vehicles tested by Edmunds, the Mini Cooper SE shows very astonishing results. She who is only announced with a range of nearly 180 kilometers, she finally managed to achieve 240, 35% more than expected. Porsche’s model, the 2020 Taycan 4S, also comes out of this test with an EPA estimate of around 325 kilometers, while in real conditions the car from Stuttgart easily exceeds 500 kilometers.
If this test is to be taken with caution, the conditions are not always the same between the test of one vehicle and another, it is not uncommon to hear Tesla owners complain about the capacities. far too optimistic autonomy of the car.
