The new President of the United States, Joe Biden, plans to replace the entire federal fleet of vehicles … by electric cars. The American president mentioned the entire federal fleet, namely cars, but also trucks and SUVs. Enough to allow this same fleet to display a side “zero emissions“, But also to create many jobs.
The US federal fleet soon to be 100% electric
Indeed, Joe Biden has confirmed his desire to offer a new electric fleet, developed from vehicles built in the United States. Obviously, if everything were to be confirmed, it would give the electricity market a big boost in the United States. The opportunity is indeed quite enormous, since the American government had (at the end of 2019) a fleet made up of … more than 645,000 vehicles!
Joe Biden explained in particular: “the federal government also has a huge fleet of vehicles, which we’re going to replace with clean electric vehicles made right here in America, by American workers, creating millions of jobs, a million auto worker jobs .”
For the General Services Agency, en Leveraging clean-energy vehicle technologies, the agency will support the president’s climate goals, while working with the U.S. auto industry to ensure these next-generation vehicles are built in America by American workers.
According to TechCrunch, this goal will be complicated to achieve, since many vehicles are currently leased, which will necessarily slow down the operation depending on the contract. There are also other obstacles to this electrification of the federal fleet, starting with charging infrastructure.
It remains to be seen now which manufacturers will be able to supply the US government with electric vehicles. There is Tesla of course, but also General Motors (GMC, Chevrolet…) without forgetting Ford. To be continued.
