Arrived in 2008 on PlayStation 3, Sackboy is the cute and endearing little character of the LittleBigPlanet license. After two excellent opuses developed by Media Mollecule, the license passed into the hands of Sumo Digital for the third episode. Less appreciated by fans, it remains a pleasant opus that pays tribute to platform games. Unfortunately, not everyone has the creative genius of Média Mollecule.
For the launch of the PS5, Sackboy is back. Still in the hands of Sumo Digital, this time we have the right to a spin-of and not a sequel. With Sackboy: A Big Adventure, you will travel through many worlds to save your friends from a terrible threat. Will the adventure be big and beautiful? We can see this immediately!

Sackboy is back!
For lovers of platform games, Sackboy is back to take you on a great adventure on PS5. After having enjoyed success on PS3, PSP, PSVITA and PS4, it is only logical that we can see our hero land on PlayStation 5.
This time, we find our mascot in a small village populated by sakripants (the characters of LittleBigPlanet). This village can be found at Patchwork World (otherwise known as the Imagisphere for fans of the series). All these beautiful little people are going to be disturbed by Vex, the antagonist of this Sackboy A Big Adventure who feeds on people’s nightmares (a kind of cute Freddy Kruegger) to install chaos everywhere in Patchwork World. All the inhabitants of the village are kidnapped by Vex and it is our little Sackboy who will have to save all these beautiful little people.
Here we go for a great adventure through six worlds where you will have (alone or with others) to collect dream bubbles to counter Vex’s nightmares. During this adventure, some allies will help you and you will have to face some bosses.
A very basic story with a rather anecdotal and very childish scenario. Alas, even if the universe of LittleBigPlanet is well respected, we regret to see that Sumo Digital has not succeeded in reproducing the small paw of Media Mollecule with a game that leaves us a little bit hungry on the narrative side.
Little Big Adventure
Even if it does not bear the name of “LittleBigPlanet”, this Sackboy A Big Adventure is very largely inspired by it. Just as it is also greatly inspired by a certain Super Mario Mario 64 with dream bubbles to be collected during the levels which recall the star system in the adventures of the mustached plumber.
We are on a colorful, cute adventure that inevitably reminds us of the adventures of this little sackboy in the first games of LittleBigPlanet. We go through the levels with several mechanisms to activate, some enemies to avoid, objects and collectibles to collect in order to be able to customize our little hero.
The entire LittleBigPlanet universe is respected. Between the small bubbles to collect, the items to collect, the photo booth at the end of the levels to see our score, the small hidden areas, this Sackboy A Big Adventure is a very pleasant spin-of that will bring back a lot of memories to the fans. from the first hour.
During our adventure we will also find a lot of small scripted actions that will allow us to use objects like a grappling hook or a jetpack. We will also go through musical levels which will punctuate the adventure and it is very effective. David Bowie, Depeche Mode or Britney Spears without forgetting the excellent level with the music Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars.
The adventure is varied with different levels (going from point A to point B, races…). Worlds and environments are also diverse. The panel of enemies is a bit limited and tends to repeat itself over the course of the game, which helps us to overcome the increasing difficulty of the game quite easily since we have time to discover the attack mechanics of these last.
Small shadow on the board, the French version is not as pleasant as in the old opus and the voice of Sackboy (only to make a few small noises, fortunately the latter does not speak) is not convincing either and accentuates this effect. (too) childish which disturbs a little.
The second dark point of the game is the abandonment of creative mode. It is no longer possible to create your levels and share them online around the world. Collecting objects and creating will now only go through the making of costumes for our little Sackboy. Pity.
The DualSense – LittleBig Use?
This is of course something much anticipated now in PS5 games. The use of the famous DualSense. If the latter seduced us in Astro’s Playroom, she cooled us down a bit on Spider-Man Miles Morales. Alas, she is not going to transcend us in Sackboy A Big Adventure.
So yes, we feel the haptic technology in Sackboy quite subtly, but there is nothing really incredible unfortunately. The same goes for the triggers which are hardly used either (except for the blocking of the latter with the grapple). Once again it’s a shame, but we’ll put it on the fact that the game is still cross-gen and that is not to (too) disadvantage PS4 players.
Therefore, with new technologies so little highlighted, it does not pose any problem to connect your DualShock 4 to your PS5 to experience the adventure with several friends or family. Because, this is the strength of this little Sackboy A Big Adventure, the game is ideal for playing with several people and having a good time together on the same console. You will be able to play up to four on the same PS5 with DualSense or DualShock 4. Practice.
It’s beautiful. It’s fluid. And it is fast!
The title on PlayStation 5 clearly benefits from great advantages. Between the 4K resolution, the 60FPS and the almost nonexistent loading times thanks to the speed of the SSD, the experience is very appreciable. Some textures are really beautiful and realistic (the textures of Sackboy for example are quite crazy).
Whether cardboard, plastic or fabric, everything is very beautiful, very clean. Once again we have the impression of finding ourselves in a sumptuous animated film and it is really a pleasure.
The title has the right to a rain of color that makes you smile. The artistic direction is really nice and from the first minutes we are enchanted in this cute world and the magic operates on its own.
My review of Sackboy A Big Adventure on PS5
Very beautiful, fluid, cute and accessible to all, Sackboy A Big Adventure is a very nice game which will be able to please the whole family. Endowed with a good lifespan (around 10h) with a lot of replayability (to complete the levels at 100% and collect all the items), it constitutes an honest experience allowing to play alone or up to four on the same PS5 .
However, we regret a slightly excessive price (€ 69.99) as well as the absence of the new sensations of the DualSense. Besides these two bad points, this spin-of from LittleBigPlanet is welcome at the launch of the PlayStation 5 and it will manage to seduce many players young and old.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure
- 4K, 60 FPS, it’s beautiful, it’s fluid
- Very nice artistic direction
- Rediscover the world of LittleBigPlanet
- This fantastic sound design
- Playable up to four on the same console (and with PS4 controllers)
We like less
- High price (for ten hours of play)
- It’s very childish with a VF that leaves something to be desired
- The absence of creation mode
- The DualSense left out (again)
