The Spanish manufacturer confirms once again its willingness to advance on the "new solutions" mobility taking advantage of the Smart City Barcelona to unveil its electric scooter and a new version of the scooter. The manufacturer also creates an entity that takes the lead in developing these new solutions for the entire Volkswagen Group.

At the Smart City show, the manufacturer Seat has decided to present these two future electric vehicles, namely its electric scooter and the new version of the electric scooter, called respectively the Concept e-Scooter and e-Kickscooter.

For Luca De Meo, CEO of Seat, " this Smart City Expo is currently the most important event related to the integration of connectivity in cities. It's a trade show, but it's not just people who make sensors for the streets. We have been there for four years and we are presenting something. This year is the electric scooter and the new version of the electric scooter ".

Once again, we are witnessing an event attesting to the transformation of the market and the automotive industry, which must now meet the need to lower our CO 2 emissions.2 (and theirs, on pain of exposing themselves to very heavy fines), but also to unclog cities. At Seat, the project goes further because the brand has even created a specific entity, currently composed of 20 people, responsible for developing these new mobility solutions for the entire Volkswagen Group.

A (heavy) removable battery that provides 115 km of autonomy

If you're wondering, be aware that Seat has not developed this electric scooter ex nihilo. In the same way that his electric scooter XS is designed in partnership with Segway, the scooter is created on the basis of the Silence S01 electric scooter.

So we find some similarities that make the strengths and weaknesses of this scooter, starting with its removable battery. A design that the manufacturer Silence is not the only one to propose, but which nonetheless seduced Seat and which motivated him to work with Silence. That, but also, and especially the fact that Silence is a builder of Barcelona and that it facilitates all exchanges and developments.

A positive point that this removable battery, especially as it extracts very easily from the scooter through an ingenious system of casters that rock and unfold automatically when removing the battery from its compartment located on the left of the scooter. The photos below were made on the model of Silence (installed just in front of Seat on this Smart City expo) because the Seat scooter was still in the concept state, the manufacturer could not operate handling as easily. Anyway, to avoid being stolen the battery, you must start by unlocking it with a "zipper" under the seat. This is also where we find the direct charge for the battery, when it is possible to directly connect the scooter to electricity. In the opposite case, the removable battery plays its role, not without some constraints.

The battery pack is composed of Lithium-ion cells of Samsung origin whose announced capacity is 5.5 kWh. Once removed from the scooter, everything is transported in the manner of a trolley. On Silence's booth, it's small hostesses who operate the maneuver to show us how simple it is. But make no mistake: this big block, designed with an aluminum structure to dissipate heat, weighs 35 kg – bringing the total weight of the e-Scooter to around 135 kg.

It's very heavy! Climbing even a few stairs to reach his apartment seems unimaginable unless hoist wildly at each step … which is obviously not recommended.

In return, this big battery allows the scooter to claim a range of 115 km in its most economical mode and therefore the least efficient. As always it will be necessary to make a concession between the maximum power of the engine 7000 W (11 000 W in crest) and the endurance of this equivalent 125 cm3. The maximum speed is announced at 115 km / h in mode 3, the fastest. The announced torque is 240 Nm and the 0 to 50 km / h would be done in 3.8 seconds.

According to the teams of Silence, it takes a little less than 6 hours to completely recharge the battery. We look forward to checking the consumption of this two wheels to calculate the cost per 100 km which should be ridiculous – Seat estimates it to 70 cents.

Finally, the large white circle on the side of the battery is equipped with LEDs that illuminate to indicate the level of charge.

A fact that we obviously find on the fully digital counter of the scooter.

Notable improvements

Out of this common technical base, we note the improvements on the Seat model compared to the S01 of Silence. Moreover for Luca De Meo, " these partnerships are very interesting for both brands. This avoids Seat to leave a blank sheet that is of no interest and Silence takes advantage of the technical and industrial capabilities and know-how of a car manufacturer ".

And it is true that even if it is only a concept, the e-Scooter offers better finishes, especially at the handle of the battery.

The rear wheel that encloses the electric motor is also covered with a cover on the Seat model, not on the Silence. It does not say that it is always present on the final version, certainly not in the same material as the concept before us. It is forbidden to touch it, but the fairing seems to be in a plastic that will not fizzle facing different projections (pebbles for example) on the road.

The fork head also has a windshield design … original (we are not fan) which in the state should not offer great protection to the wind. On the other hand, the originality is much better for the optics. Let's move on to the small block LEDs that should be enlarged to meet the lighting standards, to dwell on the very fine and scrolling indicators as found in the world of the automobile. Not bad !

At the back the lighting is also quite nice in the state but it should expand on the final version.

Finally note that the machine has a safe that can accommodate two helmets … jet. According to us a full face helmet and a semi should pass.

Finally, Silence integrates two USB ports to its model, Seat keeps them, which is obviously a very good thing.

Price and availability of Seat e-Scooter

No availability dates and no specific prices are communicated for this e-Scooter. We must then cross the news between what is happening on the stand of Silence and what the CEO of Seat shares with us during our interview. In this case, Silence already sells his S01 to 6,600 euros in Spain. A tidy sum even if it is a 125 cm equivalent that should lead to significant fuel savings and maintenance – a control every 5,000 km is recommended by the manufacturer.

On the Seat side, Luca De Meo also mentioned the 6,000 euros price, adding that the thermal scooters that are selling very well are around 4,000 euros. And to the CEO to add that " Seat has the financial capacity to offer a different model where scooter customers could rent the battery. Seat could then create battery stations where customers would come to recover their charged battery And thus enjoy all the advantage of the interchangeable battery.

Should we read between the lines and understand that the Seat e-Scooter will be sold around 4,000 euros with a battery rental? We will not have time to make it clear, the interview ends. One thing is for sure, if Seat wants to have his card to play, it is better for him that he is not too slow to materialize his product, because the competition (especially Chinese) land massively … and she wants to be very aggressive.

e-KickScooter: a scooter designed for self-service

We will not dwell too much on the electric scooter, because this second model will obviously not address the same users as the currently marketed model, the eXS KickScooter. This scooter, sold especially in concession Seat is designed on the basis of a Segway product, rebadgé for Seat.

It's the same for this new model called e-KickScooter that the builder of Martorell rather destines to rent. This is why this new version is heavier (19 kg) which should dissuade more than one to raise them to throw them in a channel for example.

But this overweight is also explained by the presence of a large battery (capacity not communicated) whose autonomy could reach 65 km in the slowest mode – the maximum speed is limited to 20 km / h. What to reduce the number of refills for rental service operators. Finally, the 350-watt motor now located in the rear wheel would provide sufficient power to climb more easily (or at least less painfully) important coasts.

The e-KickScooter will arrive next year and Seat obviously considers the French territory as " the place to be To deploy its solution.
