Like many events, in 2020 Gamescom had to settle for a virtual version because of the pandemic. For this year, the organizers of this annual video game mass had hoped to organize a hybrid event, with a virtual part and physical spaces on which the public could test the new games presented by the studios.

But unfortunately things will not go as planned. “The German Games Industry Association has decided to organize gamescom 2021 as a fully digital event. This decision was taken after long discussions with partners and exhibitors. Thus, the organizers take into account the current situation, in which too many companies are unable to participate in physical events this year due to the still difficult development. In this way, they also meet the strong need of partners in terms of security planning. This means that gamescom 2021 will run exclusively digitally and free of charge for all gamescom fans ”, we read in a press release.

In addition, the organizers also recall the success of the virtual event organized in 2020: more than 100 million views on videos, more than 50 million unique users, and 370 participants. Organizers will be able to build on the success of the 2020 virtual event to deliver an even more engaging experience this year. This event will take place from August 25 to 27, 2021.

Hopefully, there will still be many important announcements from the video game industry at this virtual event.

A return to a physical edition for IFA 2021?

While the organizers of my gamescom make a fine decision to go for the virtual format, those of IFA Berlin (another big tech event that takes place in Germany) are still planning to have a physical event in September. . “While the world is on the right track to emerge from the pandemic, IFA Berlin is expected to unfold as a real, large-scale event from September 3-7, 2021”, can we read in a press release published a few weeks ago.

But of course, we can assume that everything will depend on the health situation in September. Many organizers had already announced a return to physical shows, before backing down. This is the case of the gamsecon which has just abandoned its hybrid show project, but also of the CES in Las Vegas.

In 2020, the organizers of this show had anticipated a return to normal. But ultimately, the evolution of the health situation forced them to organize a virtual CES in January 2021.
