The iPhone 12 and 12 mini are purple now.

That is, some of them are. Purple is a new optional color, to go with the existing black, blue, green, red, and white. We got some hands-on time with the purple iPhone, and we’re excited to show you what it looks like in real life.

Colorful phones have a long history. Your phone is your most personal computer; it’s as much a statement of self, and a statement of fashion, as it is a communications tool. The Motorola Razr spawned blue, red, pink, and other colors starting in 2005. It was followed by the colorful LG Chocolate, a big hit of 2006.

Apple, too, has long understood that it’s selling fashion objects as much as it’s selling tech. The 1998 Bondi Blue iMac was a statement against the “beige boxes” that then ruled desktop computing; it was followed by orange, green, red, and other colors. Apple started to color its iPod Mini music player line in 2004, followed by the first brightly colored iPhones, the 5c line, in 2013.

Popping new colors is often a way phone makers juice sales mid-cycle, and we are just about at the middle of the cycle for the iPhone 12. The phones came out in October 2020. Believe it or not, that was six months ago, and we’re probably only six months away from the launch of the iPhone 13. Typically, mainstream phone model sales peak in the few months after launch, but a new color can grab new attention and give the phone a new bump.

There’s nothing new about the purple iPhone 12 and 12 mini other than that they’re purple. It’s a nice purple, sort of a pale lavender, with a matching lavender metal border. It’s tasteful like all Apple colors are. If you typically put your phone in a case, Apple’s selling a $49 “Amethyst” silicone case that exposes the camera bump to make it clear that you also have a purple phone. There’s also a $59 “Deep Violet” leather case.

The edge is also purple.

If you know you want a purple iPhone but can’t decide which model to get, read our reviews of the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 mini. Of the two, I personally prefer the 12 mini; it has the same power in a more hand-friendly size, at a lower price. That said, my opinion has proved unpopular. The iPhone 12 mini is the least popular member of the iPhone 12 lineup, many reports have said, with people turning to the larger model because of its bigger screen and better battery life.
