What is the standard iPhone 12 worth in photos? According to DxOMark one of the most accessible models in the range delivers photo and video performance close to the iPhone 11 Pro Max and the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G.
Photo benchmark specialist DxOMark had already tested the iPhone 12 Pro Max to which he had awarded the rating of 130 points, but also the model just below, the iPhone 12 Pro which had obtained the rating of 128 points because of slightly worse sensors.
DxOMark today publishes its classic iPhone 12 photo sensors test, the model just above the iPhone 12 mini with which it shares the same sensors, and the same chip, so we expect the result with the iPhone 12 to be about the same than that of the iPhone 12 mini.
DxOMark finds the iPhone 12 impressive in video, even if competitors do “as well or better”
As a reminder, the set of photo sensors of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini is as follows :
- Main sensor: 12 MP (1.4µ photosites), 26mm f / 1.6 equivalent, OIS, dual PDAF
- Ultra-wide angle: 12 MP 1 / 3.6 ″ sensor, 13mm f / 2.4 equivalent
- LED flash
- 4K Dolby Vision HDR video recording at 24/30/60 frames per second (DxOMark only conducted its tests at 2160p / 30fps)
The smartphone score is divided into three categories. The smartphone has thus obtained a Rating of 132 in photo, 42 in zoom and 112 in video. In detail, DxOMark salutes the mastery of exposure, colors, autofocus and textures.
In addition, previewing the image before it is taken gives a fairly accurate idea of the result – especially computational effects like Bokeh. Which with a rating of 55 is far from being the best on the market.
But it should be noted that this model does not embed a LiDAR sensor to correct the errors in the detection of the depth of field. In video the smartphone is more balanced. With good scores on the side of exposure, colors, autofocus, noise control but also stabilization.

“The iPhone 12 delivers good photo performance and impressive video capabilities, especially for those who can take full advantage of the smartphone’s Dolby Vision HDR processing. In terms of pure imaging performance, however, there are a few competitors that offer similar or better quality, sometimes at lower prices ”, concludes DxOMArk.
