Netflix will not be satisfied with movies and series. Indeed, last week, we recalled that the VOD giant would also offer video games in its catalog.
And today we have new information about this project. This time, they come directly from the company. Indeed, as reported in an article published by Engadget, when announcing its results for the second quarter of 2021, Netflix spoke of its expansion in video games.
Netflix will focus on mobile games first
At first, the company will focus on content for smartphones, trying to expand the interactive content already available on the platform, such as the Bandersnatch episode of Black Mirror. In addition, Netflix does not intend to offer a special price for video games.
The titles will be available to subscribers who use the offers currently offered by Netflix. Obviously, the goal is not to find a new source of income, but rather to increase the number of subscribers as well as their engagement.
“We see games as another new category of content for us, similar to our expansion into original films, animation and unscripted television.”, states the company in a letter to shareholders.
At the moment, it’s unclear when video games will hit Netflix. But according to a Bloomberg article, the first titles would arrive as early as next year. Note also that according to a crazy rumor, Netflix could collaborate with Sony for the introduction of video games on its VOD platform.
Leading the initiative is Mike Verdu, a Facebook and Electronic Arts alumnus, who becomes vice president of video game development at Netflix. Before Netflix officially mentioned its video game projects, this recruitment was seen as a strong signal of the company’s desire to establish itself in gaming.
A way to stimulate growth, after the acceleration observed in 2020
In any case, the SVOD is preparing to launch into video games at a time when it observes a slowdown in its growth compared to 2020. Last year, confinement had boosted this growth.
As Engadget reminds us, during the first quarter of 2020, Netflix added 16 million subscribers. In the first quarter of 2021, Netflix added 3.98 million new subscribers. And in the second quarter of 2021, the company added 1.5 million.
Nevertheless, Netflix expects good growth in the third quarter of 2021: 3.5 million new subscribers against 2.2 million during the same period in 2020.
In any case, with regard to income, the indicators remain green. In fact, compared to the same period in 2020, they increased by 19%, or a quarterly income of 7.3 billion dollars.
