This April 30, arrives on Nintendo Switch a new exclusivity: New Pokémon Snap. It is obviously the “continuation” of the opus initially launched on Nintendo 64 at the end of the last century, and in which the player is invited to participate in a photo safari through Lentis. The goal ? Photograph the Pokémon in their natural space.

New Pokémon Snap at the best price

New Pokémon Snap test, the beautiful Nintendo Switch excluded?

There are (a little over) 20 years, Nintendo allowed photography and Pokémon lovers to combine their two passions with Pokémon Snap, on Nintendo 64. A game whose concept was quite far from a “classic Pokémon” ”, Since the goal of Pokémon Snap was then to immerse the player in the heart of a photo safari on the Pokémon island, aboard a vehicle whose route is predefined, and in which it is a question of photographing the Pokémon . A rail-shooter of sorts, in which the only weapon is a camera.

With New Pokémon Snap, Nintendo therefore wishes to offer this same principle again, this time to holders of a Nintendo Switch. No good or bad surprise then, since after choosing your character, we will immediately get our hands on a camera, which will accompany us throughout the adventure. Indeed, it will be a question here of boarding the Neo-One, an autonomous vehicle, and of making sure to capture the most beautiful photos of the Pokémon in the area, knowing that the film is limited to 70 shots per excursion.

As in the original opus, at the end of each “run“, It will be a question of selecting the best shot for each type of Pokémon encountered. From then on, Professor Mirror will assign a score to each photo, based on various criteria, such as the posture of the Pokémon photographed, its size in the photo, the appearance of other Pokémon in the frame … Quickly, the whole is necessarily repetitive, but we nevertheless take a certain pleasure in trying to get THE ideal photo.

Of course, you can share your most beautiful pictures online, to show the whole world this cute Aquali enjoying an apple, and that you have just immortalized.

A photo safari … rather fun in the end

Obviously, over the course of the game, we will unlock new abilities, new places, new functions, which will make it possible to make certain Pokémon react (by throwing an apple for example), and therefore to capture better photos, or to meet Sparkling Pokémon. Over the course of the game, the player expands their Photodex, a photo album in which are listed all the photos captured since the beginning of the adventure.

Of course, it goes without saying that we will gradually unlock new places, with the desert, the beach, the forest… with the possibility of crossing each place day and night. Depending on the player’s prowess, we climb in “level“, Which again and again allows you to find new Pokémon, to constantly improve your score. Nintendo announces more than 200 species of Pokémon to immortalize in photos, as much to say that there is something to do.

Graphically, New Pokémon Snap is not a technological showcase for the Nintendo Switch. The whole is pleasant for peepers, but there is a certain aliasing, not to mention a fairly present clipping sometimes. The modeling of Pokémon is very correct, and we easily recognize its favorite beasts, but we should not expect a deluge of special effects here … and after all, this is not really what players expect. this New Pokémon Snap.

Our opinion on New Pokémon Snap

In absolute terms, the very concept of this New Pokémon Snap is childishly simple, so much so that one might (rightly) wonder how much pleasure one can derive from virtually taking pictures of Pokémon. However, this little photo safari manages to keep the player in suspense for a good ten hours, thanks to a very pleasant atmosphere, but also a very intelligent design, always with this little novelty, this new area, this new object, which always comes at the right time to encourage the player to restart a small session (or two). Nothing transcendent either, or frankly thrilling, let’s get along well, but the game is still more interesting than the side “photo safari”Which is described on the jacket does not suggest it. To be reserved for those who are fond of Pokémon therefore.
