While Nintendo goes it alone with its new OLED Switch, Sony and Microsoft are battling it out with their new next-gen consoles. For the first time since the release of the PS5 and Xbox Series, the two companies are publishing sales results. If both break all records, the PS5 seems to have met with a more frank success.
10 million Playstation 5 delivered
In a press release, Sony announces that it has delivered 10 million PS5s to distributors (as of July 18, 2021). In view of the inventory situation, we can therefore deduce that these 10 million units have found takers. A record allowing the PS5 to dethrone the PS4, the most popular console in Sony’s history to date.
“Despite supply challenges and a global pandemic, we are proud to have delivered a transformative gaming experience that captivates gamers around the world. Everyone at Sony has gone out of their way to make the PlayStation experience better than ever. “ Sony writes in its press release.
The Japanese take the opportunity to highlight the success of exclusive console games. Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart has sold 1.1 million copies, Returnal to 560,000 copies.
But the full box comes from Spider-Man Miles Morales : 6.5 million players have been tempted by the antics of the spider-man. The success of the PS5 is even closely linked to that of the game since it systematically appears in the top of the best-selling games in the periods when the PS5 is available in stock.
Xbox Series: the best start in history
On the Redmond side, the weather is good too. While presenting Microsoft’s financial results, Satya Nadella said that the Xbox Series had the best start in console history.
The company no longer communicates precise sales figures, so we have to play the guessing game. The Xbox One holding the sales record of 5.6 million copies (ahead of the 5 million Xbox 360), the Xbox Series have therefore logically exceeded 5.6 million sales.
In the absence of detailed figures, we will rely on sales estimates published by VGChartz on July 23, 2021. The site predicted 10 million sales of PS5 and nearly 6 million sales of Xbox Series.
An update on stocks
These sales records are all the more remarkable given that Sony and Microsoft are facing a shortage of components and therefore a complicated supply. The PS5 and Xbox Series are hard to find, much to the delight of “Scalpers” (buy the consoles at the public price and resell them at a high price).
Will the situation improve by the end of the year? Sony wants to be reassuring. “We are steadily making progress in the available global supply and we look forward to the day when anyone who wants a PS5 can easily get it.” declares the Japanese in its press release.
Sony and Microsoft have every interest in finding a solution quickly. Because new successful licenses will soon be available and will undoubtedly generate additional sales. Battlefield 2042, Far cry 6 Where Halo Infinite are among the most anticipated games. But without a console, no games.
In the meantime, Microsoft is taking the opportunity to highlight its Game Pass and its hundreds of games available for a monthly subscription of a few euros. While waiting to see what will give the Netflix-Sony association announced recently and scheduled for 2022.
