- Available March 13 in France and sold from 909 euros, the Samsung Galaxy S20, S20 + and S20 Ultra smartphones make photo quality their main argument.
- To keep its promises, Samsung has equipped them with a host of sensors as well as innovative features.
- Among them, the 8K photo, a shooting mode that allows you to take hyper-sharp photos of 33 megapixels!
Samsung announced on Tuesday the launch of its new Galaxy S20, S20 + * and S20 Ultra ** smartphones. Making their photo quality their number one argument, they are clad with a variety of photo modules allowing all visual daring.
A processor (the Exynos 990, the latest high-end chip from Samsung), a good dose of artificial intelligence, algorithms you want, here it is: everything seems to come together to make
S20 of particularly gifted photo smartphones. But the South Korean manufacturer had another idea to make its latest toys even more attractive: the 8K photo.
At the moment, the 8K (7,680 x 4,320 pixels) only refers to a few very high-end TVs and video content … which does not exist, so to speak. By offering 8K video on its S20s, Samsung's goal is not to invite us to create content in ultra high definition, but to take photos with incomparable clarity.
To achieve this, manipulation is very simple. After shooting an 8K video clip, you just have to start playing it, press Pause where you want to extract a photo, then press a dedicated button at the top left of the screen. The desired photo is then isolated and weighs … 33 million pixels!
It is therefore possible to crop it at leisure, to enlarge it almost as much as desired, to zoom in on a detail … using the on-board photo editor. The principle recalls that of the 4K photo that Panasonic launched on certain Lumix cameras almost 5 years ago…
We briefly tested this feature and saw that it was very promising. Its ease of use risks attracting more than one. It remains to be seen whether the exclusively digital stabilization when shooting in 8K will be sufficient (it is optical / digital in Full HD) and of good quality.
* The S20 and S20 + align at the rear modules of 64 megapixels (f / 2.0, for zoom and sharp photos), 12 megapixels (f / 1.8, wide angle) and 12 megapixels (f / 2.2, ultra large angle). The S20 + adds a ToF (Time of Light) depth of field (VGA) sensor to them.
** The S20 Ultra is equipped with a main 108 megapixel sensor (f / 1.8). In addition, there is a 48-megapixel sensor (f / 3.5, for a 10x zoom without loss of sharpness), a 12-megapixel sensor (f / 2.2, ultra wide angle) and a ToF (VGA) sensor.
