So it’s June 11, at the time of the evening ” The Future of Gaming Organized by Sony to unveil the PlayStation 5, which Spider-Man Miles Morales was announced. More than a year and a half after Spider-Man’s big hit on PS4, Insomniac Games was about to have us fluttering through the streets of Manhattan again.
Forget Peter Parker, this time you are going to control the young Miles Morales who will have the heavy load of replacing “Spidey” while the latter will take a little rest in Europe with Marie-Jeanne. You therefore find yourself in the shoes of a Spider-Man in the making and who will have to protect New York City during the holiday season.
By September 2018, Marvel’s Spider-Man had been a huge success. Technically, flawless, very correct lifespan, well-crafted scenario, very pleasant gameplay. The game is still a big hit on the PS4 today. Miles Morales is not a sequel, but a Stand Alone DLC (can be played without having the original game). Will the latter succeed in becoming a staple of games at the launch of the PS5? We take stock immediately.

(Re) Hello New York!
It is therefore a year after the adventures of Peter Parker in Marvel’s Spider-Man, that the story of this stand alone begins. We find the young Miles Morales who will also be bitten by a genetically modified spider (decidedly, that sucks a little New York). From there, he will benefit from the powers of “Spidey” and will become a vigilante alongside Peter.
The story begins just as Miles and Peter neutralize a thief together in the snowy streets of Manhattan. Directly, we can notice the small light and graphic effects, appreciate the fluidity of the title and rediscover the pleasure and the sensations of the game by swinging from canvas to canvas across the buildings of New York.
But this association between the two heroes will not last long. Peter quickly announces to us that he has to travel to Europe to accompany MJ in a project around photography. So Miles will have to watch over the city alone, and he will have a job.
We are at the time of the end of year holidays and at the time of the elections. Rio Morales, Miles’ mother is running for office and New York City is in turmoil. A criminal organization called the Underground wreaks havoc in the streets and begins to distribute a toxic and dangerous product in them: Nuform.
With a threat hanging over the city, it’s time for Miles to become a real superhero and prove to everyone that he too can shine and not be in the shadow of the “real” Spider-Man.
Canvases in 4K in the streets of New York
Spider-Man Miles Morales is therefore one of the first games on the PS5 which offers two game modes. A first “performance” mode that allows you to play in 4K and 60FPS. As much to say to you that with this option, you will be entitled to a very fluid game with a very very beautiful rendering.
But also a “basic” mode which offers you an experience in 1080p, in 30FPS, but with the activation of Ray Tracing. The two modes offer very pleasant sensations with a game that is beautiful. The hair animations (one of the shortcomings of Spider-Man of 2018) are improved, we have a multitude of small details in the streets of Manhattan. The reflections on the windows with Ray Tracing are magnificent. It’s nice to have a game worthy of this next-gen from day one of the console’s launch.
The whole is sublimated by a staging with small onions and really interesting cutscenes. They are shorter than in the original game, but they are still very effective and make good use of the performance of the console. It’s a pleasure to be able to rediscover certain “calm” moments which have nothing to do with the incredible life of Spider-Man, but which show the “normal” life of young Miles Morales in his new neighborhood in Harlem.
Where are the “Senses” of DualSense?
This is mainly the fault and the big disappointment of this Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales. The famous new features of DualSense (haptic feedback or adaptive triggers) are missing subscribers. The triggers are not used at all and it’s a shame, because there was material to be done to weave the different webs of “Spidey”.
As for haptic vibrations, these are present, but not striking. We get very slight sensations when Spider-Man’s spider instinct kicks in when an enemy attacks us. We also feel vibrations (always very light) when we use the powers related to bio-electricity.
But it remains very subtle to the point where we quickly forget the sensations. When you’re focused on the action, you’re watching what’s happening on the screen and you’re not focused on how the controller feels. To compare, the sensations on Atro’s Playroom are much “stronger”and it is impossible not to feel them. In Spider-Man Miles Morales, we feel like the Insomniac Games teams have been timid not to confuse the players. Pity.

Same gameplay, few new features, but still as effective?
Do not expect to have the same surprise effect as in 2018 with Spider-Man. Because this Miles Morales is a pure Stand Alone DLC which uses the same gampeplay, the same animations, the same fighting techniques, and the same movements to fight or swing you from building to building.
The only differences are of course in Miles’ attitude. The latter is younger than Peter Parker, he has a different approach, a more “cool” style. In his way of swinging, the latter has a different swaying much more “relaxed” than Peter. Miles just moved to the Harlem neighborhood. Our adventure is punctuated by the sound of American hip-hop which adds a lot of style to the game.
The other novelty is the bio-electric powers of Miles Morales. The latter can (unlike Peter Parker) gather energy and expel it in different ways. You can do bio-electric special moves, burst the ground, and many more. Miles can also become temporarily invisible to set up new approaches to attack or surprise enemies.
Although the novelties remain quite rare (DLC obliges), it remains as effective as ever and we immediately take great pleasure in launching ourselves in the streets of New York. The opportunity to extend the fun that we started in September 2018 while waiting for a real sequel!
A questionable lifespan …
With Spider-Man Miles Morales, Insomniac Games extends the fun of the original game released in September 2018 on PS4. The experience will offer you a good little adventure of ten hours with a lot of secondary objectives. Overall, we’re on the same journey and the same activities as the original 2018 game. The main missions are interesting with some really well staged. For the rest, it’s quite repetitive and without much interest.
Likewise, players who struggled in 2018 with Spider-Man are going to feel the same awkwardness with missions that are quite repetitive. We must go to a place, investigate, find evidence to advance our investigation and repel a wave of enemies. We regret not having more variety in the missions with epic moments like the famous bridge scene that was presented during the PlayStation event last September. So, we reassure you, this is not the only epic scene in the game (big crush on the finale), but we would have liked a few more moments like this!
My opinion on Spider-Man Miles Morales
Each new generation of console is accompanied by a few “showcase” games that show the capacity of the new machine. In general, these are small experiences that are technically convincing, but not always unforgettable in other respects.
With Spider-Man Miles Morales, the Insomniac Games teams succeed in offering this bluffing technical experience (4K, 60FPS, RayTracing), while being equally effective in other areas. In terms of gameplay, lifespan (which is correct for a DLC), in the interest and enjoyment of the game. The PS5 clearly holds its first launch hit which will extend the fun that we started in 2018 on PS4 while waiting for a real sequel.
We regret, however, a lack of interest in side missions and some repetitive moments. As well as the features of the DualSense which are completely neglected. And that is a real shame for a “First-Party” game and when you see the potential of the controller.
