After a long wait fueled by some teasing distilled by Elon Musk on social networks, it is now official, the California firm will market an electric pickup by 2021. A monster can accelerate as hard as a Porsche 911, tow more 6 tons and new design and clearly futuristic!
Would Elon Musk secretly prepare his escape for the planet he so covets, Mars? This is the question we ask ourselves when we discover the totally "lunar" design of its pickup that could have been both badly stamped "Space X" and Tesla. It was during a presentation held last night in California by the very charismatic Elon Musk that the firm Tesla lifted the veil on its seventh electric vehicle … a pickup CyberTruck!
It's now done, even if in terms of announcement, the manufacturer has still made the pawn by Rivian and his R1T who seems to decide well – in view of its various announcements – to make shadow to Tesla. And let's not forget that the big boss of the Ford F-150 pickup trucks was also promised in a 100% electric version.
The "Tesla touch": the design …
The competition is announced so, but we had to rely on the abilities of Elon Musk and his teams to do something … different.
For sure, the CyberTruck design inspired by the movie Blade Runner, did not fail to surprise the audience with a more angular line and a stainless steel structure, extremely reinforced and visibly designed in one part. That's for sure that everything gives him a futuristic look, which could almost go unnoticed on satellite photos of Mars – would Elon prepare his trip?
Whoever says pick-up necessarily says loading dump and this is where Tesla makes the difference by presenting already different visions of the configuration of this space. Why not load an equally futuristic quad Tesla or turn it into a camping space. The important data that will be sure to retain the professionals who would be seduced by this pick-up are the large loading capacity (1590 kg) and the ability to tow up to 6.3 tons for the most efficient version namely the CyberTruck Tri Motor AWD.
… and performance …
As always Tesla will propose several configurations of his machine. The first is equipped with a single engine placed in the rear position. The power is not communicated, but we learn on the site that the 0 to 60 MPH (96 km / h) is achieved in 6.5 seconds. The battery pack (which we also ignore the capacity) promises more than 400 km of autonomy. Since this information is based on US data, it is likely to be an autonomy according to the US EPA cycle, even more difficult than the WLTP cycle.
The Cybertruck becomes more efficient in its Dual Motor version with the 0 to 96 km / h in 4.5 seconds and a range greater than 400 km (300 miles). Towing capacity increases to 4.5 tonnes. Finally the three-engine version impresses with its ability to shoot more than 6 tons, but also, and especially by its acceleration fulgurante since the 0 to 60 MPH would be shipped in 2.9 seconds. Elon Musk had announced, his pickup could charge as much as the legendary Ford F-150 and accelerate as hard as a Porsche 911.
The autonomy of this version would be equally impressive since Tesla evokes more than 800 kilometers (500 miles). Too bad, on the other hand, in addition to not indicating the power of the batteries and engines, the manufacturer does not specify the location of this third engine. Will there be two in the rear position and one in the forward position?
… and a remarkable space on board
Last but not least impressive for a pick-up, the Cybertruck seems to offer a living space on board worthy of an SUV.
The central console is obviously futuristic, with a single central screen in the manner of the Model 3 except that it is here 17 inches … like Model S and Model X. We notice especially the double row of three seats and one very large glazed area. Not bad !
Since the conference last night, Tesla has posted its booking site while stating that it will be possible to complete the configuration when production starts in 2021. The three-engine version will be launched later in 2022.
Fares start at $ 39,900 for the Single Motor, $ 49,900 for the Dual Motor AWD and $ 69,900 for the Tri Motor AWD. Tariffs for which Tesla already proposes to subscribe to the option of autonomous driving for 7000 dollars. A way to "secure" the price that could increase in the future, as indicated by the online configurator.
The Tesla Cybertruck looks so again as a disruptive model and if you are rather seduced by the machine, know that you can manifest your intention to buy by paying 100 dollars … only. The coming years will be busy for Tesla, who is also due to release his small SUV, the Tesla Model Y and his truck Tesla Semi. An entire program…
