Who has never dreamed of being able to play online with their friends while not being on the same console? Since the democratization of online gaming (from the PS3 / Xbox 360 generation), the difference in platform was an important element to take into account. It was impossible for PS3 players to play online with Xbox 360 players and vice versa.
Fortunately, things are progressing and evolving in the right direction. In recent years, the magic of the cross-platform has allowed publishers to offer servers on which PS4 and Xbox One players can play together. On some titles (like Fortnite), it is possible to play against Switch, PC and even mobile players.
Unfortunately, for all of this to be possible, the machine manufacturer must also give his authorization. After several years to block, it seems that Sony has finally decided to put forward this new way of playing.
Cross-play games for the PS5?
Interviewed by the magazine Axiosce weekend, Jim Ryan, the current president of Sony Interactive Entertainment returned to the question of cross-play. The president of SIE thus declared that PlayStation “supports and encourages crossplay”. The latter justified his remarks by citing large multiplayer games that are already in cross-platform on PS5 such as Fortnite, Rocket League, Call of Duty or even Minecraft. Jim Ryan goes on to say that “the list will continue to grow” in the months and years to come.
Statements to be taken with a grain of salt since Sony did not seem to really support cross-platform lately. We can cite the controversy Borderlands 3 which allows players to have fun together online regardless of the platform … Except on PS4 and PS5 where cross-play is always disabled.
Let’s hope all the same that this can evolve in the right direction. According to the latest rumors, Destiny 2 should be the next title on the list.
