While in a small month, one of the greatest sagas in the history of cinema will end, the hype around Star Wars is already beginning to invade us. Because yes, on December 18th, Star Wars IX – The Ascension of Skywalker will come to conclude the story of Anakin, Luke and the Skywalker family, 42 years after the beginning of the saga in 1977 with Star Wars: A New Hope .
In the meantime, fans can discover The Mandalorian series on Disney +, but also become a real Jedi with the new Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order game available since last Friday on PS4, Xbox One and PC. A brand new game, far from the Battlefront fiascos, which offers a single-player adventure, no season pass, no DLC, no microtransactions, and no loot boxes either, focusing only on the story of Cal Kestis, a young Jedi Knight who to survive the order 66.
Could this finally be the worthy return of Electronic Arts who will propose the long-awaited game to fans? A game at the height of the cult saga of George Lucas, which has not had an excellent adaptation for many years. On paper, it looks very good. Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order is the promise of an epic adventure in the heart of the galaxy, to discover a little more about the rise of the empire between Star Wars III and Star Wars IV and discover a little more about the order 66.
After the cancellation of several games including Star Wars 1313, or even the famous Star Wars Visceral Games headed by Amy Henning, the screenwriter of the first three opuses of Uncharted, Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order is announced as the last hope. The spark that will ignite the fire that will defeat the series of failures. Is the challenge raised? Where will Cal Kestis sink on the dark side of the Force?

Execute the order 66
So it's in May 2016, for the famous May 4th 4th May With You Day, that Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order is officially announced. A few weeks later, in June 2016, Electronic Arts confirms the project at the EA Play in Los Angeles. At that time, no title, no logo, EA simply announces that several Star Wars games are planned, including a game by Respawn Entertainment (TitanFall, Apex Legends).
It will finally wait for the Star Wars Celebration 2019 last April to discover the title of the game, the character, the context of the game and discover the first images. After a satisfactory first approach at the EA Play in June, I was really looking forward, as a fan, to immerse myself in this adventure that will perfectly fit in the timeline of the Skywalker saga. A bit like Rogue One does in film.
The spark that will ignite the flame
It's a flagship replica of the latest trilogy. The spark that will ignite the fire that will defeat the First Order. Well, in Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order, the spark that will ignite the fire is Cal Kestis. But it will not go to war against the First Order that does not exist yet. The fire he is going to unleash is the resurrection of the Jedi order.
The game plunges us after the events of Star Wars III, Cal is a simple collector scrap, the entire galaxy seems to be under the influence of the Empire. Of course, the story of Jedi Fallen Order begins when Cal is unmasked by the Empire. After several years in the shadows, Cal is a Jedi hunted by the Empire and the two inquisitors formed by Darth Vader: The second sister and the ninth sister.
Inquisitors "Second Sister" and "Ninth Sister" are the two main antagonists of the game. Two Jedi women who will track down Cal at the other four corners of the Galaxy. If we like the style of the second sister (left), we are much less fan of the ninth sister. A creature with French dubbing and dialogs not really believable. Too bad for this casting error.
Cal is a young Padawan who did not have time to complete his training. He is a Jedi to become and he does not yet have the level to confront Sith lords. Because yes, Cal did not complete his Jedi knight training and he is still an apprentice. Your adventure begins when Cal escapes from Bracca, the planet where he was hiding from the Empire aboard the Mantis, a ship with the next two Jedi teammates on board. Greez Dritus, the Mantis pilot and Cere Junda, an old Jedi who tracked Cal to find and save him.
The adventure really begins on the planet Bogano, in a shrine built by the Zeffo, an ancient civilization in which there is a Jedi holocron. Cal is led into the sanctuary room by BD-1, a small droid who will accompany him throughout the adventure. The holocron in question contains the list of locations of Force-sensitive children indoors to resuscitate the Jedi order. However, this holocron is hidden in the sanctuary and Cal will have to take several tests to find it.
Indeed, the fate of the children being so important for the survival of the Jedi order, that the holocron was hidden by the former Jedi master Eno Cordova. The latter explains to Cal that he will have to follow his path and take up a series of challenges to prove his wisdom and his Jedi talent. That's when your quest to save the future of the Jedi begins.
Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order will take you on several planets, including Zeffo, Kashyyyk, Dathomir, and Ilum. With the flora and fauna of the Star Wars universe and even faces known as Saw Gerrera one of the leaders of a group of resistance fighters who fight against the Empire.
The perfectly respected Star Wars universe
From the first minutes in the world of Jedi Fallen Order, fans will be conquered. In our first steps, we are immersed in the universe. The buildings, the inscriptions, the creatures, the noises of the ships and other sound effects, the small melodies of atmospheres, the first seconds are pleasant. And this will be the case throughout history. At times, we even have the right to well-known music from the Star Wars saga that will give goose bumps to all fans.
The diversity of planets, fauna and flora will once again be a big plus. Some planets have already been seen in the extended universe of Star Wars movies, they will recall good memories to some fans. On other planets, we will find races and mythical creatures like the Wookiees who will help us during our journey (but my God they are ugly in the game). It is also a pleasure to explore the planets and search every corner to find the chests that unlock personalization elements or fragments of force to discover the secrets of the planet.
On the side of the Empire also we have many references. We find a whole set of Stormtroopers! From the basic soldier to Commander Stormtrooper, the Imperial Flametrooper, or the Sandtroopers. Many ships, robots with mechanical droids, droids probes, or the K-2SO that we saw in Rogue One.
On the side of your best companions, you will have BD-1, a droid that will follow you everywhere and that will be a real asset! Over the course of the adventure, you will be able to improve it and it will be a great help! Hijacking terminals, hacking robots, deploying a zip line and much more!
The other very good point is the management of Jedi art. Whether the Force or the use of the lightsaber, again fans will be charmed.
From Padawan to Jedi Master
Since Cal did not have time to complete his initiation, he is still Padawan. In addition, it has been many years since he did not practice. Thus, you do not fully control the Force and your lightsaber at the beginning of the adventure. As you play, you'll earn experience points to complete your skill tree, which is divided into three categories: Strength, Lightsaber Battle, and Health.
As you play, you will become more and more powerful and master the Jedi art. And clearly, it gets really great. Defeat enemies with force, slow down time and launch your lightsaber to kill enemies, repel blaster fire with your sword. Really, it's a treat. In addition, it will be possible throughout the history to customize your sword! From the material of the sword to its color, through the materials, the handle, etc … You will be able to create your own sword. And that's really the class.
The battles will become more and more interesting with many combos that will be possible to achieve through your learning. Combos that will be welcome, because the fighting will quickly become more and more complicated. At times, the game is very demanding. The latter can recall at times games FromSoftware (Dark Souls, Sekiro). Four difficulty modes are offered with the story mode (very easy), the Jedi knight mode (easy), the master mode (normal) and the hard mode. If the very easy game mode is really no problem for anyone, the easy mode will already be a good challenge for a first game and for players who are not used to games of this style. As for the normal and difficult mode, expect to fight.
Especially since some fights are poorly managed. Far too many enemies attack at the same time to the point where if you are touched by one, others can chained you, leaving you no time to protect yourself or dodge. Between the enemies who attack at a distance, the ones who are charging you into the heap and the creatures, some fights become real tortures.
Disturbances in the Force
If Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order wants to be a really beautiful game (some bugs, slowdowns and alliasing on PS4 and Xbox One, but very clean on PC, PS4 Pro and Xbox One X) that it wants to be very faithful to the Star Wars universe and really nice in its management of the Force and Jedi art, it is not free of defects, far from it.
Jedi Fallen Order is a game halfway between Uncharted and Tomb Raider for the Exploration, Enigma and Sekiro Shadow Twice side for the combat and difficulty system (with the difference that on Star Wars you can choose the difficulty). Allowing players to navigate the Star Wars universe in semi-open worlds is a good thing, however, after having tasted Naughty Dog's attention to detail with the Uncharted, many things go wrong in this Star Wars.
The lightsaber that passes through most walls and objects, just like our character who can also pass through certain elements of the decor. The game offers "meditation" points to regenerate our life, our Strength Gauge and improve our character. These points also serve as checkpoints to reappear in case of death. They are however very badly disposed and more and more rare during the adventure. Thus, it is not uncommon to have to make a good five minutes of course. But get used to it, because you have not finished going back and forth on the various planets Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order. Because, as soon as one mission is accomplished, to move on to the next you have no other choice than to redo the whole route in the opposite direction to return to your ship. Not to mention that enemies respawn every time you spend on a meditation zone! Which in the end, is useless since if you want to regenerate your life at the end of a fight, all enemies will reappear after your break.
Regarding the enemies precisely, they will disappear a few seconds after their death. And sometimes even under your eyes. Which is not frankly terrible visually. And to continue on the visual concerns, many textures take a long time to load, especially when you browse an area while sprinting. Moreover, it is not uncommon to have freezes free of 2 to 3 seconds if you go too fast from one zone to another. However, it is not for lack of long, long, very long times of loading to launch the game and between each death.
Finally, I will note that the characters are not all charismatic, starting with the hero Cal Kestis. Personally, I had a lot of trouble on his charisma. It is clearly not the hero who will make us shudder at times. Ditto for Cere, the old Jedi who again will not blow us by his presence. As said a little earlier, even at the level of the antagonists we do not find the class of a Darth Vader. If the second sister saves the furniture, the ninth sister is really not amazing. It's a shame, because it would have really been a big plus.
The game also offers a customization system for your character, but again, we would have liked better. We can choose about seven colors for the holding of Cal, and he add twenty different ponchos. Apart from the colors, the appearance of the hero does not change. Too bad, he would have been much more classy with a Jedi cloak. It's possible to customize BD-1 and the ship, but again, there will be just some variations of the colors.
My Review of Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order
As a big fan of Star Wars, I was expecting a lot of this new game after the huge Battlefront disappointments. And as a fan, I can only be satisfied, even if many things bother me. The game is a real success in its content. A good life, a nice gameplay that allows us to have fun with our lightsaber and the control of the Force, an extremely well respected universe whether in its artistic direction or sound-design. The game is beautiful, varied, with a correct story that fits perfectly into the Skywalker saga between episode III, the spin-of Rogue One and episode IV. The game offers some references to the saga elsewhere, without much to do (I even find that a little more fan service with characters or references would not have been too much). Some sequences are not bad with a special mention for a scene towards the end of the game with music reminiscent of a sequence of Star Wars III and that gave me shivers. Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order is a good game, without being an excellent game because of its faults, which are not unbearable, which are rather small, but too numerous. An experience that will appeal to the fans of the first hour and promises good times to fans of adventure and science-fiction even if they do not know the universe of Star Wars.
