Since the start of containment, consumers have turned more to video games. This is particularly true with regard to the time spent playing, which from March 23 to 29 increased by 38% in France and 45% in the United States. Steam, for its part, broke attendance records by surpassing the mark of 20 million users connected simultaneously.
Such a development is also very logically felt in sales. According to a study by Games Sales Data relayed by our colleagues from 20 minutes, they are up 63% worldwide for the period from March 16 to 22. This represents 4.3 million games sold in a single week and 2.74 million in digital version, with the key a new record.
Very good results in the United States
These figures should continue to increase because they take very little account of the exit ofAnimal Crossing New Horizons intervened on March 20. This new Nintendo game is a real hit and has therefore boosted the industry.
Another study by the NPD Group confirms this trend. This time it focuses on the American market. During the month of March, video game spending in the United States exceeded $ 1.6 billion, up 36% from last year. To situate this performance, it's the best month of march since 2008.
In detail, the Nintendo Switch represents a very large part of this amount. The PS4 and Xbox One are also not outdone with an increase of 25% each. Game sales are also up 34% boosted again by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Animal Crossing and Doom Eternal.
It will be interesting to see if this improvement is confirmed over time but in the short term in any case, the gaming world is doing very well.
